Pure Copper Railing 2.0, Portfolio #31
Copper is a beautiful and versatile material that we love to work with at our shop. Recently, we had the opportunity to create a large-scale project for a customer using only copper. The finished piece is a combination of a 1.9 inch diameter tube with a 3/16 inch wall thickness and solid 3/4 x 2 inch legs. The copper used in this project is oxygen free and typically used for large antenna's because of its improved conductivity.
Welding the legs to the top cap was a challenging task that required our 300amp TIG machine and helium as a welding gas. To ensure the legs were securely attached, we also preheated the copper with a torch. The small bars that connect the legs are 3/8 inch solid copper.
The installation process was also unique, as we had to core out concrete with a 3 inch coring bit and build a custom fixture to drill the holes vertically on a slope. This method is not often seen, but it is possible.
Overall, this project was a great opportunity for us to showcase our skills as, and, for a while there, we felt like large-scale gold-smiths attentively crafting and sculpting projects into fruition. We look forward to more opportunities to work with copper in the future.
