A Crafty railing, Portfolio #26
This railing was created in a craftsman style, and it’s never easy to make it work.
As you can see, this railing uses a small section of angle, which is attached to the floor. Each section is comprised of two pickets, the lower angle and the section of the top cap.
For this to work on the stairs, every single piece must be fitted on site; trust us, there isn’t a way around it.
The straight sections can be built in the shop and brought on-site. A stiffener bar is then removed with wood spacers placed between each section; without the spacers, the entire railing will crown as much as 3 inches due to heat input into the cap rail.
If you look closely, you’ll notice that both the railing and handrail have some customized drop-down details.
