What are the benefits of iron gates?

The main benefits iron gates provide are primarily their strength and durability. To be more specific, iron gates are easier to repair than aluminum gates, and offer much high levels of security aluminum gates as well.

Where are iron gates often used?

Iron gates are often used in high-end residential installations. Typically, iron's chosen when the customer wants a) a custom gate design and b) where aluminm is not be strong enough or suitable for the application.

In commercial applications, iron gates are used more commonly utilized in areas that have frequent traffic. This is because aluminum gates get damaged in high traffic areas and the parts holding it together generally don't last as long (due to the volume of openings, for example).

Another benefit iron gates provide is their ability to secure a person's property from break-in's and vehicle damage. If you look in the US, such as properties in New York, Washington D.C., Virginia, Pennsylvania, etc., you will see houses with heavy iron gates and heavy iron railings that were fabricated and installed before modern welding existed. Heavy iron gates are still in existence today in Europe, and many of these are few hundred years old up (even up to 1000 years!!!) with restorations being performed on them when required.

Understanding what you're getting when you're purchasing a gate ensures that you don't hav to worry about your project after it's completed.

Customized Heavy Iron Gates

Customization of iron gates or railings is highly flexible. The material when heated moves like clay, all-be-it-several-times harder when it cools (don't worry we have a hammer for that, too). We love what we do, and we will take your vision, create a mold, and form the iron and steel into a one-off custom piece that fits perfectly onto your property.

We care about project, considering each one to be an investment in ourselves and our customer.

A little bit about or process.

Our process is simple.

  1. We talk to you and find out the right starting point for your project.
  2. We begin the design phase and refine your goals, placing them into our design.
  3. We create a final design and work out most of the kinks, then taking it and tune it into a construct-able project that will work with the conditions it will be working in.
  4. We then cut, form and create. In some cases this means creating a product to be test fit. In other cases, this means building it to completion immediately.
  5. Metal finishing. Finishing is the fundamental part that really differentiates the average to the excellent. We probably could save many hours and thousands of sanding disks and grinding wheels by avoiding or minimizing finishing, but we know we can do better and we intend to do it right the first time.
  6. Lastly, painting or powder coating. With a heavy iron gate you may find you want to galvanize the gate by either spray galvanizing or hot dripping the entire project. This allows the gate to last for an extremely long time and it no longer relies upon paint or primer to protect it. This will often require some clean up or refinishing to smooth it out again. Depending on the design, a high-quality automotive single stage paint with an epoxy primer can also last a very long time with no maintenance. That being said, both galvanizing plus the automotive painting process is really the best combination you can get.

Driveway gate abbotsford portfolio #9

Driveway Gate,
Abbotsford, B.C.
Portfolio Feature #9.

This is a driveway gate project we had to redo; one where the customer unfortunately spent a significant amount of money on to have completed by another company previously.

The gate was not manufactured in a way where it could withstand wind very well. Being a privacy gate, the wind resistance needs to be much higher than normal, requiring additional backing and strength spread across the gate to hold the paneling in place.

One of the main problems was that the gate had the paneling tacked in. A short piece of flat-bar was tacked in and the panels were ripped right out of the gate.

We figured out a solution that would provide much more strength with less wind resistance. It would look better than the previous gate and be built to a much higher standard of quality. We replaced the undersized hinges with a 3/4 hinge and reinstalled the motor system.

After we were done the the gate work properly again like it should have the first time.

Some of the materials we used:

This driveway gate is made from 2x4 aluminum sides with 1x4 aluminum horizontals, which makes this one strong, sturdy gate.

Driveway Gate
Aldergrove, B.C.,
Portfolio Feature #6:

This custom driveway gates in Aldergrove, B.C. were designed and forged for customer of ours who creates detailed mill-work creations at Van Arbour Design Inc. We initially drafted this gate design in our 3d Augmentation Software so that our customer could see where we were going with this project and what they were going to get. Needless to say, they loved it.

Driveway Gate Design Notes:

The Gate Frame

We started with 2x4 aluminum metal material for the bottom and sides of the outer frame of the gate. 2x2sq's were used for a lighter look on top. This also complimented the custom Zigzag detail you see at the top of the gate.

The Gate Hinges, by Badass Gate Hinges

We used machined ball bearing hinges by Badass Gate Hinges. These are a solid, machined aluminum block with C-clip sealed bearings. We chose this because it offers zero maintenance to the customer, it's low friction and it's simple to replace the bearings within the housing if you ever need to.

The Driveway Gate Motor: Liftmaster RSW12ul

We discussed and presented 3 different driveway gate motor options. Ultimately, we settled on the Liftmaster RSW12ul. One main reason we chose it was that it allowed us to avoid cutting across the driveway. After all, no one wants to pay someone to dig a hole and fill it back in no reason. One advantage the liftmaster provides is it allowed us to use a reflective photoeye and wireless keypad, which exactly matched our customers needs. This motor also allows MyQ Access, and has built in battery backup. The motor is mounted on a concrete pad. It uses two cast iron gear reduction boxes to run a swing arm at low rpm. When the gate is closed the arm locks out and has very little movement in the gate when closed

Driveway Scroll Gate Aldergrove Langley Portfolio #4

Driveway Scroll Gate
Aldergrove, Langley, B.C.,
Portfolio Feature #4:

This custom driveway scroll gate was produced by us for an excellent customer that wanted a unique gate to sit their home. One of the unique features of the home that's influencing this gate's design is an angled driveway.

We began this project by loading up our drafting program and designing a concept that the customer really liked. With the draft approved, we had the scroll frame cut by a laser and fabricated the scroll into a 3d channel.

In the photos you'll notice that the gate has a spear in the centre. It is forged from a solid chunk of 1x2 aluminum.

Given the angular driveway, the gate itself is built to suit it, and the double pickets were all cut individually.

We then coupled this gate with a Liftmaster LA 500 motor system which provides high speed and reliability for residential applications.

Driveway Gate Maple Ridge BC portfolio #3

Driveway Gate,
Maple Ridge, B.C.
Portfolio Feature #3:

On the top you can see a few of the drawings we produced for the client after we spoke about their project goals. We reworked the concept design until the client was ecstatic about it.

The materials for this driveway gate are mainly aluminum. The gate's primary frame consists of 3x3 aluminum tubing. The gate's outer frame (where the hinges connect) is made from 3x6 aluminum tubing. This provides a bold statement and rigidity. The gate pickets are 1 1/2 sq tubing which are hand-cut to fit inside the frame.

We use laser cutting methods to cut the sheets required to fit the curve and recurve of the double upper rails. And we use sealed roller ball bearing hinges to hold the weight and provide the driveway gate with a smooth operation.

The main gate also uses the same design of hinges with a concealed automatic return spring.

The main gate also features a high-security exterior door strike with low voltage ac power with a buzzer to let visitors in. This setup allows for easy alarm system connectivity and for various methods of access, such as intercom, keypad, remote, cell phone, and so forth.

This gate uses a Liftmaster LA500 motor system for high speed, reliability and MyQ connectivity.

Portfolio: Residential Home, Stairs & Driveway, Mission, #1

West Coast, Modern Gateway & Stairs,
Mission, B.C.,
Portfolio Feature #1:

Here is a driveway gateway and staircase completed for a residential home in Mission, B.C.. It displays a west-coast, modern style with gold-edge properties.

The stairs are made from plates of steel (1/2 x 8) for each tread (1 1/2) short of the full length of the wood treads. The main stringer is made from HSS steel (6 x 8). We designed the stairs with a large U shape and two landings. The landings required a bit more work because we had to first lay them out, install the upper and lower sections, and then pull up the large middle section which allowed us to weld it together on-site.

We created the driveway gate a few months later. We used a custom, granite powder coat finish that was special ordered specifically for this project. What makes this design special is that we've never seen the use of this unique finish in other projects to date.

Like the stairs, the driveway gate is a modern style with solid, horizontal aluminum slats (1/4 x 3 1/2). Tensioners (1/4 x 1/2) are used to keep the horizontals straight and tight. The frame is made from HSS Tubing (2x4).

This project also included a custom mail box and house number to finish it off.

The gate's automation system is mounted low so it isn't visible. The motor system is a Liftmaster LA 500, which provides a quick open and close speed with battery backup. This allows the customer to open and close the gate remotely with their cell phone anywhere they have service with the provided app. This system is also compatible with nearly any vehicle with a home-link button system.
